What qualifies as a hypoallergenic skincare and paraben-free skincare product? Well, basically, if you can eat it, it’s pretty good for your skin. Sounds weird but it’s true. Paraben-free skincare products are hypoallergenic meaning the ingredients are not of a synthetic nature.
Sadly, some of the skincare products where animal testing was involved (rats and dogs) showed smaller litters and low birth weights. Scientists have also undertaken research on removed cancerous breast tumors and found a paraben called methylparaben in large numbers-over 60%.
If parabens are so dangerous to our skincare, why are they added in the first place? To preserve their shelf life much like the proverbial Twinkie! They are much lower in cost to produce for companies who don’t want to invest in hypoallergenic skincare.
A list of parabens to avoid in skincare products include: ethylparaben, butylparaben, methylparaben, propylparaben, isobutylparaben and, benzylparaben. Parabens are colorless and odorless and have been shown to cause premature aging due to the amount of time they spend in the body. So, now you ask yourself, where can I find hypoallergenic skincare products? Luckily, there are quite a few products that contain natural ingredients that follow the guideline-if I can eat it; it’s probably good for my skin!
Beyond natural ingredients, the hypoallergenic skincare or paraben-free skincare product you choose should be mild enough to apply to an open wound-that’s how safe they are. One good moisturizing skincare product we found contained almond oil, calendula flower and, beeswax for healing deep cracks in the skin.
Protecting your Dermis or the tissue layer of your skin below the epidermis where you have nerve endings, sweat glands and, blood vessels is important. There are many natural hypoallergenic skincare and paraben-free skincare products that contain ingredients that are essential in protecting your Dermis.
These products include ingredients such as wakame, a japanese sea kelp, manuka honey, and macadamia nut oil. Wakame is incredibly high in vitamins and minerals that help heal the skin. Manaku Honey comes from New Zealand and has great natural anti-bacterial qualities. And macadamia nut oil has qualities that are very similar to the skin’s natural oils, so that it protects and heals the skin.
Sadly, your local department store may not be the best place to find hypoallergenic skincare products. Even if they claim to be hypoallergenic, they probably will not have the high quality natural ingredients that you will need to keep your skin healthy.
But there is hope. Look for small companies that have a skincare philosophy that states that their products are all natural. The larger companies are too caught up in mass marketing of their products to be concerned about this. And become educated on reading ingredient labels. It’s really the only way to be sure you are finding paraben-free skincare products.
